Inspired by Volvo’s experiments\, German car companies throughout the 1980s and 1990s implemented various forms of participation-oriented forms of teamwork granting autonomy to shopfloor workers. Although work organisation has been modified during the last two to three decades\, the automotive industry is still a stronghold of worker participation in Germany. \n\n\n\nThe webinar looks into current developments in the German automotive industry. How is the ongoing dual transformation of decarbonisation and digitalisation impacting workplace innovation for shopfloor workers? Based on case studies in German OEM and suppliers\, the webinar will discuss a polarisation trend within workplace innovation. DESCRIPTION:I-SKILL National workshop for Flanders (Belgium): “How to promote lifelong learning in Belgium in a context of the green and digital transition?” – 7th  November 2023\, Leuven\, Belgium (In Dutch).\n\n\n\nAlthough lifelong learning is becoming increasingly important in the context of the green and digital transition\, participation in lifelong learning in Flanders appears to be too low and there is not yet a strong learning culture. The I-SKILL project studies how lifelong learning can be stimulated in the EU\, both among employers and employees\, and what policymakers and the social partners (can) do in this area. The network is currently composed of 11 research institutes from all over Europe to facilitate the international exchange of best practices\, ideas and people (for more information\, see: www.elmi-network.eu). DESCRIPTION:I-SKILL Final Conference: “A European skilled labour force to navigate the green and digital transformations – The role of industrial relations and the social dialogue” – 13th October 2023\, Brussels\, Belgium.\n\n\n\nThe promotion of adult learning has been a key part of the EU policy debate since the Lisbon strategy in 2000 and over the last two decades\, many binding and non-binding EU initiatives on lifelong learning have been launched. The topic has gained further momentum since the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2020\, the European Commission released its ‘Communication on a European skills agenda for sustainable competitiveness\, social fairness\, and resilience’ including 12 flagship actions to be achieved by 2025.  \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, President von der Leyen declared 2023 the European Year of Skills emphasising the importance of education\, upskilling\, and digital skills. Over the last three years\, the ISKILL research project has contributed to advance understanding of how industrial relations and social dialogue can drive progress in adult learning in the EU as well as of ways in which workers can access quality learning opportunities to face the challenges of the green and digital transitions. SUMMARY:Industry 4.0 – ten years later.
DESCRIPTION:Ten years ago the concept of Industry 4.0 emerged in Germany and spread globally. Ten years later\, Industry 4.0 remains a “vision”: the fast diffusion of digital technologies in manufacturing and the development of fully interconnected digital factories have not materialised (yet). Nonetheless it is a “vision” that has already triggered a series of transformations that are changing the way manufacturing processes and work are organised and the way we look at the future of work\, employment and manufacturing. This international conference aims to bring together different theoretical and empirical contributions with a double perspective. We want to look back at what we have learned so far and how this has changed our collective understanding of what I.40 is and how it impacts worker and organisations. \n\n\n\nThe conference intends start an interdisciplinary discussion on how these results may lead to new empirical questions\, theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. Contributions may analyse different sectors and companies\, different stages of the production chain\, different regions and countries. In addition to the general topic of the call on I4.0\, the conference aims to outline an international collective project on the topics concerning the transformation of the automotive supply chain in various countries. The theoretical and empirical analysis in a cross-country and cross-company comparison will be intertwined with the involvement of companies\, trade unions\, policy makers at regional\, national and international level\, in an attempt to promote a dialogue on automotive issues between the stakeholders and the scientific community of automotive experts\, extending the reflection to scholars from other disciplines as well as other sectors.  The conference “Industry 4.0 – ten years later” will be held in the heart of Motor Valley\, at the Department of Economics “Marco Biagi”\, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia\, Italy. The conference will be structured into sessions: selected papers will be presented and discussed in thematic panel\, which will be organised along with plenary sessions\, networking spaces and social events.
